The original idea for starting this blog came from working with beginning adult cellists in private lessons. Many of these students are extremely dedicated to learning and had considered playing an instrument for a long time. The problem as with most of us, is that life is busy, so time is at a premium for practice and lessons. Having a list of practice tips, helpful advice, short video demonstrations and more that is accessible at any time of the day sounded like a good idea to most everyone that I posed the question to.

I learned the cello as an adult, then put it down for a while, and am now beginning to play again. My biggest current challenge is intonation and would appreciate any advice you have on playing in tune. Tapes are out of the question — plus, I find the difference between being in tune and not can be a hair’s width — much too small a distance to be solved by a tape.
Thanks for the blog!.

I just taught a lesson that focused on intonation today, in fact. I think the ideal thing is to have someone in person to help you hear when you are off pitch. Unfortunately we cannot use a piano or digital tuner to stay on pitch because they are equal-tempered, not the quasi just intonation that we use for string instruments. I just ordered a CD of practice cello drones and I would be happy to let you know what I think after I review if you’re interested! I think this maybe a good option based on the reviews:
